Common Names in English:
Mabee's Salamander
Description
Physical Description
Species Ambystoma mabeei
3-4 in. (7-10 cm) Coloration consists of a brown to black back with a lighter belly. Pale light flecks can be seen on the sides. Are noted to have long toes and a small head in proportion to
Habitat
Like other mole salamanders, this species lives in underground burrows most of its life. These burrows, often in close proximity to temporary ponds and other wetlands in pine savannas can be over one meter deep.
Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 24 meters (0 to 79 feet).Mean = 18.170 meters (59.613 feet), Standard Deviation = 14.290 based on 6 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
Ecology: It can be found in tupelo and cypress bottoms
in pinewoods
, open fields
, and lowland deciduous forest
(Behler and King 1979). Pine savannahs, low wet woods
, and swamps
(Martof et al. 1980). It usually burrows near breeding ponds
. Eggs
are attached to submerged plant material
or bottom debris of acidic, fishless
ponds
in or near pine stands (Behler and King 1979). In Virginia, breeds
in fish-free vernal pond
in a large clear-cut area and in ephemeral
sinkhole ponds up to 1.5 m
deep, within bottomland
hardwood
forest mixed with pine (Mitchell 1991). Larvae develop in the ponds. Distances
moved into terrestrial
habitat
unknown but likely greater than 150 meters. (Ref. 61555)

Biology
Reproduction
Mabee's Salamanders breed in semi-perminant wetlands from the late fall to early spring . Eggs are laid singly or in small groups on leaves or aquatic vegetation. Metamorphosis occurs in late spring when the then larvae are 5 - 6 cm long.
