Family : Herrings , shads , sardines , menhadens ; Non-anadromous, entering limans and lower parts of river deltas , but only occasionally in freshwater . A cold-loving species, tolerating 3 or 4¦C. Feeds mainly on small fishes (mainly sprats and anchovies ) also on shrimps, gammarids and other large crustaceans. Spawns in spring and early summer.

Physical Description

Species Alosa maeotica

Males are commonly 18 cm (Standard Length) in length when caught/marketed, but may be as large as 31 cm (Standard Length).

Habitat

Biome: Freshwater [1].

Ecology: Habitat :
At sea , pelagic in deep water , entering brackish lagoons to spawn .

Biology :
Spawns first at two years. Many individuals spawn 2-4 seasons . In Romania, spawners enter Lake Razelm when temperature reaches about 7°C, in March. Spawning starts when temperature reaches about 15°C, in late April-June. Eggs sink to bottom . Spent fish return to sea to feed . In autumn, migrates to southern Black Sea to overwinter . Juveniles migrate to sea or remain in estuaries during first summer. Feeds predominantly on small fish and crustaceans.[1].
