Common Names in English:
Northwest African Cheetah, Saharan Cheetah
Description
Habitat
Biome: Terrestrial [1].
Ecology:
Thomson's gazelles are the main prey
base
. Other prey include
impala and small-medium sized adult
ungulates and their young. Cheetahs
are generally solitary and semi-nomadic. Male and female home ranges
overlap and are between 800-1,500 km². Small groups do occur,
usually as mother and cubs or male coalitions, which have a much
smaller range
, 12-36 km². Female territories are located in
areas of high prey base, which therefore determine male territories.
Cheetah densities are site specific and may be as low as 1 adult/191
km² to 1 adult/50 km².[2]

Notes
The type locality is Senegal, and Krausman and Morales (2002) ascribe it a limited distribution in parts of West Africa and the Sahel zones of southern Niger and Mali. They consider cheetahs from the Saharan zone to be A. j. venaticus, the same subspecies that occurred throughout Asia and is now found only in Iran. Pending future genetic and morphological analysis, which has been recommended for cheetahs in Algeria (Belchabir 2007), here the subspecies is considered to include all cheetahs occurring in northwestern Africa (Nowell and Jackson 1996), including Algeria and Niger and areas to the southeast.
