As of Wednesday, May 16, 2012, this site is home to about 3156242 web pages describing 1,480,580 animals, 1,424,190 plants, 199,181 fungi, 16,052 chromista, 17,015 protozoa, 16,360 bacteria, and 2,325 viruses. The database from which we generate all of this contains 14.1 gigabytes * of primary data. Pages contain 331,922 photos taken by 1,496 photographers, 1,471 sound recordings, and definitions of 227,060 terms, plus 110,997 large photos (169.5 gigabytes ) that can be zoomed and panned.
Altogether we have about 000.0 gigabytes, or 275744602586 bytes, of source data, photos and maps, not counting the pages themselves.
We have also created 183,627 pages with text, photos, and maps for taxonomic groups from Domain down to Genus. Finding all of this can be fast, because about 3 million pages are indexed for soundex searches.
We have gathered a total of about 180206609 field observations from 28,481 data sets and 1,547 data providers which show latitude and longitude, from which we have generated 298,737 State Maps, 1,367,639 Country Maps, 459,976 Google maps showing up to 200 sightings each, and 459,976 Google Earth maps showing all sightings.
